Why does my Chevy Tahoe wobble when turning, and how do I fix it?

Published on Sep 29, 2024 by Jim Glover Chevrolet Creative Team

The Chevy Tahoe is an incredible vehicle that’s been around for more than 30 years now, having first joined the Chevrolet lineup back in 1994. If you’re in the market for a full-size, traditional sport utility vehicle, it would make an excellent choice for you. But if you’ve come to this blog, you most likely already know that as you’ve probably already purchased one for yourself. No matter how great a vehicle is, they can all run into issues after several thousand miles or a few years of use. If you’ve noticed that your Tahoe starts to wobble when you’re turning, you might be wondering why it does that, but more importantly how you can go about fixing it. We’re here to help you diagnose the problem and, hopefully, put an end to it.

Potential Causes of Wobbling while Turning

There are quite a few reasons your Chevy Tahoe might be wobbling whenever you turn, so why don’t we just go through the list and explain each of them? While there could certainly be other reasons, these are five of the most common causes of wobbling when turning your SUV.

  • Unbalanced Wheels
    • Your tires are one of the most used parts on your vehicle, and one of the most susceptible to wear and tear. The more they're used, the more likely they are to become unevenly distributed. This is just one reason why it’s important to stay on top of regularly scheduled tire maintenance, such as tire rotations, tire balancing, alignment checks and so on.
  • Misalignment
    • Speaking of alignment checks, another common cause of wobbly turning is misalignment. When your wheels fall out of alignment, which can be caused more quickly by frequent driving on uneven roads, your steering wheel can certainly be affected.
  • Bad Bearings
    • While you might not think about them as often as the wheels themselves, your wheel bearings are a crucial component of the wheel. If it becomes damaged or improperly lubricated, the friction it causes can definitely lead to steering wheel wobbliness.
  • Suspension Issues
    • A bit more broad, but any suspension issues your vehicle might be having could certainly be causing your steering issues. There are many different parts that can become worn down or loose, which causes the problem.
  • Loose Wheel Hub Bearing
    • Much like the regular wheel bearings, your wheel hub bearings can also cause this issue. The hub bearing is literally designed to reduce friction in your wheels, so if they become loose or improperly lubricated, wobbliness could definitely be caused.

How do I fix these issues?

As you might be able to deduce, most of these problems come from normal wear and tear. Taking good care of your vehicle is your biggest way to prevent issues like your steering wheel wobbling, but you’ve come here because it’s already wobbly. So, how do you go about fixing the problem? The most likely solution will be to replace the worn out part, or in the event of the first realign or rebalance your wheels and tires.
