The fourth and current generation of the Chevy Silverado kicked off for the 2020 model year, and that includes the full Silverado lineup – which is the 1500, 2500HD and 3500HD. If you’re in the market for a truly capable pickup truck, you might be interested in the Chevy Silverado HD rather than the traditional Silverado 1500, as it’s even more capable than the iconic full-size, light-duty pickup. This year, the 2025 Chevy Silverado HD has received a bunch of exciting updates, so we thought we’d take a closer look at what’s new in the heavy-duty pickup while also highlighting both of its variants’ power and capabilities.
While the Silverado HD isn’t being redesigned or even truly given a mid-generation refresh, it has received quite a few exciting updates and enhancements for the new model year. We thought we’d just go ahead and list them here to give you an idea of what’s new in the 2025 Chevy Silverado HD.
Before we dive into the power and capabilities of the Silverado HD lineup, we thought we’d at least show you exactly what that lineup includes. With two models, two drivetrains, a host of trim levels, and a few different cab and bed sizes, there are plenty of configurations from which to choose.
There are two different powertrains available in the 2025 Chevy Silverado HD – the standard 6.6L V8 gas engine or the available Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo-Diesel. The standard option is capable of generating up to 401 horsepower alongside 464 pound-feet of torque, while the Duramax engine boosts power output to 470 hp and a whopping 975 lb-ft. Either option is incredibly powerful, but naturally the Duramax will be more efficient – thanks to its diesel fuel – and even more capable.
With so many different configurations, we could be here all day giving you every single available payload and towing capacity that the Silverado HD has to offer. Instead, we’ll just give you the range for both the 2500HD and 3500HD. The 2500HD ranges from 3,395 to 3,975 pounds for its maximum payload, and from 14,500 to 16,000 lbs. for its maximum trailering capacity.
For the 3500HD, its payload ranges from 4,324 to 7,234 lbs. and its max towing capacity ranges from 14,500 to 18,700 lbs. With 5th-wheel or gooseneck trailering, these numbers can be pushed even higher, with the true maximum towing capacity of each model being 18,700 lbs. for the 2500HD and 36,000 lbs. for the 3500HD.
