If you already own a Chevrolet vehicle, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the term Dexos before, particularly when getting an oil change. But what exactly does that mean? Is it a brand name or something else? And why are there different versions, such as Dexos1 and DexosD? That’s what we’re here to discuss today, to help you understand what Dexos is and explain the different Chevy oil types you should be using in your vehicle.
What Is Dexos Oil?
Introduced in 2010, Dexos is a proprietary engine oil specification developed by General Motors. It sets the bar for oil quality, fuel economy and engine protection in GM vehicles. It ensures that the oil going in your vehicles meets high standards for cleanliness, viscosity and resistance to oxidation — all of which contributes to the longevity of your engine.
As you may have gathered, or learned first hand, there are different types of Dexos-certified oil, and utilizing the correct type is essential not just for performance, but to keep your warranty in tact. In other words, make sure to stick with Dexos oil if your owner’s manual specifies it, or you might void your warranty.
Dexos1: Gasoline Engines
The difference between the two types of Dexos might seem pretty obvious once we say it, but Dexos1 is for gasoline engines and DexosD is for diesel. At the time of this blog’s writing, Dexos1 is currently in its third generation, and is thus referred to as Dexos1 Gen 3. The latest iteration was designed to accommodate engines with turbocharges and direct injection, as well as improve fuel economy over previous versions. Here are a few of the oil’s key features:
- Enhanced low-temperature flow, ensuring easier startups in cold weather
- Reduced engine wear and deposit buildup over time
- Compatibility with turbocharged and direct-injected engines
- Meets stricter standards for fuel economy and emissions
A majority of vehicles in the Chevy lineup – including the Equinox, Traverse, Silverado and more – require Dexos1-approved oil. If you’re unsure whether or not your model does, check your owner’s manual or give us a call for assistance.
DexosD: Diesel Engines
As mentioned, DexosD was designed for the various diesel engines found on the Chevy lineup, including vehicles like the Silverado, Colorado and Express van. Not every Silverado or Colorado has a diesel engine, but those that do will likely require DexosD-approved oil. You cannot substitute Dexos1 for DexosD as they’re designed very specifically for the different kinds of engines. DexosD was introduced in 2017 to reflect the growing demand for cleaner diesel technology. Here are some of its key features:
- Formulated to work with Diesel Particulate Filters to reduce soot
- Lower Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur content for cleaner emissions
- Enhanced oxidation stability and resistance to high-heat breakdown
- Optimized for fuel efficiency in diesel engines
Why the Right Oil Matters
Much like you cannot put diesel fuel in a gasoline engine and vice versa, you cannot mix up Dexos1 and DexosD engine oils. Doing so may not show immediate symptoms, but the long-term consequences can include reduced fuel efficiency, increased wear and tear on the engine and, of course, warranty issues. Diesel and gasoline engines are fundamentally different, so you cannot swap oils between them.
