Chevy Silverado Diesel vs. Gas: Which Engine Is Better for Towing, Commuting, & Daily Driving?

Published on Sep 29, 2026 by Jim Glover Chevrolet Creative Team

One of the most exciting things about shopping for a pickup truck is the number of options available to you, even after you settle on which truck you want. So, you’ve already decided you want a 2026 Chevy Silverado 1500, but which trim level should you choose? Which exterior color? Which cab style, bed length, drive system, packages, extra features, and so on.

One of the most important decisions you’ll have to make, however, is whether to opt for the diesel powertrain or one of the three conventional gasoline engines available to you. Today, we’re going to help you make that decision, by showing which type of engine is better for towing, commuting, and daily driving.

Towing & Hauling Capabilities

When dealing with trailering, torque is the most important specification to consider, as that’s what decides your raw pulling capability. The 2026 Silverado 1500 is available with a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine which is capable of generating 305 horsepower but, more importantly, 495 pound-feet of torque. That makes it the clear victor for trailering. Diesel engines like this one deliver effortless initial acceleration while towing things like heavy boats, campers, or equipment trailers up steep inclines.

But there are also three available gas engines, including the TurboMax engine with 310 hp/430 lb-ft. of torque, the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with 355/383, and the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 with 420/460. Each offers more horsepower, providing responsive acceleration in many other situations, and they have plenty of torque to make them quite adept at towing in their own right. But heavy loads will require higher RPMs to reach peak power, resulting in increased engine noise but also higher fuel consumption under heavy loads.

In other words, all four powertrain options are more than capable at trailering, but if you know you’ll be dealing with heavy, frequent, or long-distance trailering trips then the Duramax Turbo-Diesel is the obvious choice.

Commuting & Fuel Efficiency

While torque is important to towing, commuting leans much more heavily on fuel efficiency. While that enhanced torque is often the highlight when it comes to diesel engines, when engineered right they can also be more efficient than their counterparts. The Duramax Turbo-Diesel achieves an EPA-estimate 28 miles per gallon on the highway in standard two-wheel drive models. So if your daily commute involves long highway stretches, you won’t have to stop at the pump nearly as often as the other powertrain options.

Daily Driving & Maintenance Costs

That brings us lastly to the daily drivers. Daily driving involves much more than simple highway cruising. It refers to vehicles used for school drop-offs, quick grocery runs, short trips to and from work or across the city, et cetera. It includes those cold winter startups, too, since you’re using it every day. Gas engines are known to warm up rapidly, operate quietly, and handle short, frequent trips without issue. Routine maintenance for gas engines is straightforward and generally less expensive per service appointment.

However, diesel engines utilize something called Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and require specialized fuel filters along with slightly costlier oil services. Plus, modern Diesel Particular Filters (DPF) perform best when regularly driven at highway speeds. Gas engines are far more practical for the frequent, short errand-style trips of a daily driver, as making these trips in your diesel truck will lead to higher maintenance costs.
