2026 Chevy Equinox Safety Features Explained

Published on Jun 25, 2026 by Jim Glover Chevrolet Creative Team

Over the past decade plus, safety has become increasingly important in the automotive industry, and vehicles continue to get more and more advanced in the way they protect us on the road. It’s likely a top priority for shoppers in the market for a midsize crossover, as that extra peace of mind goes a long way when you’re carting around friends and family.

The 2026 Chevy Equinox has become one of the most popular SUVs on the market here in the US, and its suite of safety features went a long way towards establishing that reputation. Today we’re going to dive into some of those safety features, explaining what they’re for and highlighting their benefits. So if you’re in the market for a midsize SUV, keep reading to learn more!

Chevy Safety Assist

We won’t touch on the traditional safety features that almost every vehicle on the market today has – such as seatbelts, airbags, and traction control – as you’re likely already aware of what they do for you. Instead, we’ll focus on some of the more advanced safety technologies, and that all starts with the foundation: Chevy Safety Assist. This suite of active safety features comes standard on every single Chevy Equinox model, and it includes the following technologies:

  • Forward Collision Alert: This system uses smart camera and sensor tracking to monitor the traffic directly ahead of you. It will send an audible alert and a visual warning if a potential front-end collision is imminent, or if you are following a vehicle too closely.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking: If you don’t react to the alerts in time, the system can automatically apply hard emergency braking to help avoid or lessen the severity of a crash.
  • Front Pedestrian Braking: Driving through busy school zones or downtown pedestrian areas requires hyper vigilance. This system scans the roadway ahead for pedestrians and cyclists, providing alerts and potentially applying the brakes if one appears.
  • Lane Keep Assist: A huge benefit for long highway road trips where fatigue can easily set in, this feature senses if you begin to unintentionally drift out of detected lane lines without triggering your turn indicator. It will provide a warning and then gently steer you back into the center of your lane.
  • Following Distance Indicator: This feature lets you know exactly how many seconds you are behind the vehicle in front of you. This helps ensure you are maintaining a safe gap.
  • IntelliBeam: Lastly, this feature can automatically engage your high beams for you, then seamlessly switch back to low beams if it detects oncoming headlights or taillights directly ahead of you. This ensures you can see your surroundings and aren’t blinding others on the road, without having to constantly switch between them yourself.
