Which Chevy Silverado trim is best for off-roading? ZR2 vs. Trail Boss vs. RST

Published on Mar 26, 2025 by Jim Glover Chevrolet Creative Team

When it comes to pickup trucks, there are several options out there but only a very select few have come to be known as “the big three.” Among those iconic trucks is, of course, the Chevy Silverado, which has long been a favorite of truck enthusiasts thanks to its raw power, rugged design and versatile trim level offerings. Over the past few years, off-roading has become more and more popular, more than it ever has been before, and that extends beyond SUVs. Plenty of automakers have begun designing models or trim levels geared specifically towards that activity, including the Chevy Silverado. But which Silverado trim is best for off-roading? There are three outstanding choices to compare, so let’s pit them against one another — ZR2 vs. Trail Boss vs. RST. Which is the best for tackling off-road trails and terrain?

The Chevy Silverado ZR2 is a top-tier option for any type of drive, but when it comes to off-roading it might be the ultimate choice. It was designed with trail-dominating performance in mind, and is equipped with all manner of specs and features that make it so, starting with its very engine. Equipped with a 6.2L V8 engine, it’s capable of generating an impressive 420 horsepower alongside 460 pound-feet of torque, giving it more than enough power to tackle the trails and whatever else you require of your truck.

Some other standard features that make it uniquely well suited for off-roading include the Multimatic DSSV dampers and a pair of front and rear electronic locking differentials, but what really sets the ZR2 apart from its siblings are a series of off-road focused upgrades. These include unique skid plates, an advanced suspension system, a set of 33” off-road tires and a factory-installed lift kit for extra ground clearance.

The second option is the Chevy Silverado Trail Boss, which you should be able to tell from the name alone was designed for off-roading. It represents a great middle ground, offering plenty to become a feasible option in the off-road market without pushing too far into specialty equipment territory. It strikes an excellent balance between both worlds, making it a great option for the casual off-roader.

It still comes with plenty of great upgrades, though, like its factory-installed 2” lift kit, Z71 Off-Road Suspension system, Rancho monotube shocks, skid plates and automatic locking rear differential. It also has 18” wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, a great option for an off-road truck without pushing all the way up to the massive 33” off-road tires of the ZR2.

That brings us finally to the RST, which stands for Rally Sport Truck. The RST wasn’t designed to be an off-road truck, but rather a sport truck as you can tell by its name. It’s a high-performance pickup first and foremost, but it definitely has off-road potential. It has several powertrain options, including that aforementioned 6.2L V8.

Instead of coming with off-road features at its core, you can elect to add the Z71 Off-Road Package as an optional choice. The package adds some great off-road features found in the other trims, like Rancho Shocks, skid plates, hill descent control and that automatic locking rear differential. When equipped this way, it can make a great choice, but still doesn’t hold up to the other options.

Which trim is right for you?

So, now that you know a little bit more about each trim level, it’s time to decide which one is the right choice for you. If you’re looking for the absolute most you can get for your off-roading adventures, then the ZR2 is the right choice for you. If you want a solid blend between off-road features and everyday practicality, opt for the Trail Boss instead. If you want a sport truck that can handle itself off-road as well, then choose the RST but make sure to get that Z71 Off-Road Package. If you have any questions about any of the 2025 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck’s trim levels, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us right here at Jim Glover Chevrolet.
