The Origin of the Z71 Code
At its core, Z71 is actually an internal Regular Production Option (RPO) code within General Motors that designates a specific factory-installed off-road package. It was introduced in the late ‘80s as an option code for four-wheel-drive trucks, and it quickly became synonymous with trail-ready performance.
Back then, Chevy had all kinds of these codes, including those that were options for upgraded engines or premium audio systems. But Z71 was assigned to the Off-Road Chassis Package. As the specialized hardware gained recognition for its ability to handle rough terrain, gravel roads, mud, and other off-road terrain, Chevy decided to add bold Z71 decals directly onto the exteriors of these vehicles. It transformed from an internal assembly code into a badge of off-road honor.

What Comes in the Z71 Package?
Unlike some packages, Z71 is not merely an aesthetic upgrade. While it may make your Chevy look more rugged and imposing, its real worth is in the several mechanical upgrades it adds to your truck or SUV, meant to protect your vehicle and maximize its traction on the trails. The exact features and upgrades that come with the Z71 package will vary from model to model and year to year, but the standard suite of equipment found in the Z71 package generally stays the same. - Off-Road Suspension & Shocks – Special tuned shocks meant to absorb harsh impacts and improve off-road stability.

- Chevy Silverado – Both the 1500 and the HD models offer Z71 as an Off-Road Package as well as built right into certain trim levels, such as the Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss trim levels, which also add things like a two-inch factory suspension lift and 33” all-terrain tires.
- Chevy Colorado – Midsize truck shoppers can opt for the Z71 trim level itself, which combines maneuverability on narrow trails with off-road suspension tuning and an automatic locking rear differential.
- Chevy Tahoe & Suburban – This pair of full-size, traditional SUVs offer dedicated Z71 trim levels as well, each featuring an aggressive front fascia design for improved approach angles, including red recovery hooks, standard four-wheel drive, and available Adaptive Air Ride suspension.
- Chevy Traverse – The latest model to add Z71 capability, this three-row crossover has its own Z71 trim, which adds a twin-clutch AWD system, terrain modes, and front skid plates.
