How Reliable Is the Chevy Equinox Over Time? What Tulsa Drivers Should Expect After 100K Miles

Published on May 21, 2025 by Jim Glover Chevrolet Creative Team

If you’re in the market for a dependable midsize crossover utility vehicle here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, or the surrounding area, you should definitely consider the Chevy Equinox. Whether you’re looking to purchase a new vehicle or a pre-owned one, we love the Equinox here at Jim Glover Chevrolet, and it has a great reputation for reliability. But how reliable is it over time? While that’s not an easily quantifiable question to answer, we thought we’d at least give it a shot before diving into what exactly Tulsa drivers should expect from their Equinox after it passes 100K miles on the odometer.

How long can a Chevy Equinox last?

There are all kinds of factors that play into a vehicle’s longevity, so we can’t give you a definitive answer, but we can use past examples to at least give you an idea as to what the upper limits of how long a Chevy Equinox can last are. On average, assuming all the proper maintenance has been taken care of, the Chevy Equinox is known to last between 200,000 and 220,000 miles. Using those upper limits as an example, and assuming an average of 15,000 miles per year, you could drive your Equinox for up to 15 years. But as we mentioned, this is the average, so you have to take those other kinds of factors into account as well, such as your driving habits and conditions.

What are some common issues after 100K miles?

Crossing the 100,000-mile mark on any vehicle can be a scary moment, but plenty of modern vehicles are known for lasting past this mark, some even much longer than that. However, it’s important to keep in mind that your vehicle will require more attention after this milestone, both in terms of maintenance and perhaps with repair or replacing worn out components. Here are four of the most common issues faced and reported by owners after they hit 100K miles in their Chevy Equinox:

  • Engine
    • Your engine is often the hardest working component of your vehicle, and much like our own bodies they get worn out with age. You’ll want to pay closer attention to your engine and its behavior the higher your odometer gets, but in particular if your Equinox is powered by a 2.4L four-cylinder engine. Some of these engines found in older Equinox models have a reputation of encountering oil consumption issues, which can potentially lead to engine damage.
  • Transmission System
    • Overall, the transmission systems found in the Equinox throughout history are quite reliable, but with age it becomes more important to change your transmission fluid frequently, mixing in flushes when called for, to help prevent things like slipping and hard shifting.
  • Suspension & Steering Components
    • Wear and tear on many of these components is to be expected the older your vehicle gets, even more so if you frequently drive through rough road conditions. Pay particularly close attention to your shocks, struts and control arms.
  • Timing Chain
    • There is a precedent for issues with the timing chain over time in the Equinox, which if left unaddressed can lead to costly repairs. Once you hit the 100K mark, make sure that your mechanic is checking this component whenever you have your vehicle inspected to stay on top of things.
