Chevy vs. Toyota Reliability in 2025: How Does the Chevy Lineup Stack Up?

Published on May 29, 2025 by Jim Glover Chevrolet Creative Team

It’s no secret that one of our biggest competitors is Toyota. Chevrolet builds some incredible machines in all different shapes and sizes, but so does Toyota — and Toyota has established itself quite the reputation when it comes to reliability. Chevrolet has a reputation for quality and dependability itself, but how does the 2025 Chevy lineup actually stack up against the reliability of Toyota? That’s what we’re here to figure out today.

Reliability is honestly one of the most important factors to consider when shopping for a vehicle, even though your first instinct is likely to look at specs and features. If you have a dependable vehicle it means you’re likely to have fewer unexpected repairs and issues, lower costs for maintenance and ownership and, most importantly, extra peace of mind any time you hit the road.

Does Chevrolet Have a Reputation of Reliability?

We mentioned the reputation of reliability that Toyota has built for itself, but does Chevy have a similar reputation? While it might not be quite as synonymous as Toyota is with reliability, Chevrolet has long been recognized for producing dependable, long-lasting vehicles. The company has a reputation for utilizing high-quality materials, advanced engineering practices and rigorous testing procedures, ensuring that all of its vehicles deliver consistent performance year after year.

For the 2025 model year, Chevy has taken even further strides towards reliability by improving drivetrain efficiency, refining its manufacturing processes and enhancing vehicle software to minimize common issues. Plus, one of the best ways to enhance reliability in any vehicle is to offer a competitive and comprehensive warranty, which Chevy certainly provides for its vehicles.

How Does Chevy Compare to Toyota in 2025?

One of the best ways to gauge reliability is to look at official studies and surveys released by reputable automotive industry sources — our personal favorite is the U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study released by J.D. Power each year. Toyota and Chevrolet both dominated the study this year across a multitude of segments, but let’s first highlight the overall brand rankings. This year Toyota ranked fourth overall with 162 reported problems per 100 vehicles, but Chevrolet wasn’t that far behind tying with Cadillac for fifth place with 169. To put in perspective, last year Toyota took second with 147 and Chevy was in fourth with 174.

As for individual vehicle segments, as we said, both brands pretty much cleaned house. Unfortunately, Toyota did manage to earn the Most Dependable Model overall with the Toyota Avalon, but here’s how the other categories that both brands qualify for turned out:

  • Compact Car: Toyota Corolla (Chevrolet does not have an entry)
  • Midsize Car: Toyota Camry (Chevrolet did not rank)
  • Premium Sporty Car: Chevy Corvette (Toyota does not have an entry)
  • Compact SUV: Toyota RAV4 (Chevrolet did not rank)
  • Midsize SUV: Nissan Murano (Chevy Blazer, Toyota Venza both ranked)
  • Small SUV: Nissan Kicks (Neither brand ranked)
  • Large SUV: Chevy Tahoe (Toyota did not rank)
  • Upper Midsize SUV: GMC Acadia (Neither brand ranked)
  • Large Heavy Duty Pickup: Chevy Silverado HD (Toyota does not have an entry)
  • Large Light Duty Pickup: Chevy Silverado (Toyota did not rank)
  • Midsize Pickup: Toyota Tacoma (Chevy Colorado ranked)
  • Minivan: Toyota Sienna (Chevrolet does not have an entry)

As you can see, it wasn’t a clean sweep by any means, but both brands tend to rank incredibly high in dependability, which goes to show just how reliable both brands are as well as how the Chevy lineup stacks up to Toyota.
