Best Chevy Trucks for Towing This Spring

Published on Apr 14, 2026 by Jim Glover Chevrolet Creative Team

As we pass officially into spring and begin looking towards summer, it’s time for all of the outdoor activities to begin, if they haven’t already. From hauling a boat to the lake, to hitching a trailer for your landscaping gear, or even tugging along the RV for a family getaway, towing often starts to ramp up around this time of year.

Whether your current truck just isn’t cutting it anymore, you’re simply ready for an upgrade, or it’s finally time for you to join the truck club, you might be interested in a brand-new Chevrolet pickup for all your hauling needs. We’ve put together the following list of the best Chevy trucks to consider for towing this spring.

Chevy Silverado HD

There can be no doubt that the best everyday truck for towing from the Chevy brand is the Silverado HD. With two major options available – 2500HD and 3500HD – these are definitely your workhorses when it comes to trailering. While you might not need to go this big if you’re a casual hauler, one of these trucks is definitely the right way to go if you tow the big stuff. Think horse trailers, heavy machinery, or large fifth-wheel campers.

  • Max Towing
    • Silverado 2500HD: 22,050 lbs.
    • Silverado 3500HD: 36,000 lbs.
  • Max Payload
    • Silverado 2500HD: 4,200 lbs.
    • Silverado 3500HD: 4,714 lbs.
  • Engine Choice
    • Regardless of truck, the Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 is the superior choice when it comes to trailering capacities. Choosing the 6.6L V8 gas engine will result in less capabilities.

Chevy Silverado 1500

While the heavy-duty trucks are the obvious choices when it comes to sheer power and capabilities, if you don’t need something quite that capable then the iconic Chevy Silverado 1500 might just be the perfect choice. This legendary pickup has built its reputation over decades, and it remains one of the most capable light-duty trucks on the market.

  • Max Towing – 13,300 lbs
  • Max Payload – 2,260 lbs.
  • Engine Choice – For the best towing experience, the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel is the obvious choice. If you can’t sense the trend already, diesel engines provide more capabilities, so choosing one of the EcoTec3 engines would significantly hinder your towing ability. The TurboMax engine is a great second choice, but it won’t offer as much as the 3.0L Duramax.

Chevy Colorado

That brings us finally to the Chevy Colorado, which has been engineered to punch well above its weight class. While it’s a midsize pickup truck, it still offers a surprising amount of capabilities, plus many of the other advantages that come with being a smaller vehicle. If towing is more of a hobby or something you only need to do occasionally, and never anything incredibly heavy, then the Colorado makes a great choice.

  • Max Towing – 7,700 lbs
  • Max Payload – 2,046 lbs.
  • Engine Choice – The Chevy Colorado is only available with a 2.7L TurboMax engine, but it’s quite powerful and capable, even offering more standard torque than some of its full-size competitors at 430 pound-feet.
