Earlier this month we highlighted the fact that we’re beginning to look ahead to the 2026 model year, in fact some automakers have already begun releasing their 2026 models. By now you’ve likely heard some rumors about the future of the Silverado, but in case you haven’t yet read our blog on the 1500 model — unfortunately, the next generation isn’t likely to kick off until the 2027 model year. The Chevy Silverado 2500HD is likely to follow, if not the same year then the year after. Until then, we have the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD to look forward to, so let’s dive into what to expect from the full-size, heavy-duty pickup truck this year.
What’s new for 2026?
The fourth generation of the Chevy Silverado family kicked off with the 2019 model year, but the HD lineup followed in 2020 — hence why we mentioned it might take an extra year. The Silverado 2500HD very recently underwent a mid-generation refresh which was introduced for the 2024 model year. This facelift brought with it enhanced aesthetics, updated technology and other improvements throughout the vehicle.
For that reason, it’s likely that the 2026 model year won’t see any significant changes. However, as in the past, Chevrolet is typically good about making some changes each year. It’s too early to tell what these changes might be this year, but they’re usually small quality-of-life enhancements that seem pretty minor but ultimately go a long way towards better enjoyment of your vehicle. Alternatively, if Chevy doesn’t have anything to update, they might add a special edition trim level or package to keep things interesting.
What’s coming for the 2027/2028 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?
Now that we’ve highlighted the rumors and what we can expect regarding the 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500HD, let’s look ahead to that aforementioned next generation. Whether it comes in 2027 or 2028, we are expecting some significant and exciting upgrades to the whole Silverado line, including the 2500HD. Obviously it’s still far too early to say anything definitively, but some rumors have certainly begun circulating for the next-gen Silverado.
We thought we’d compile some of the things people think are coming to the vehicle, which we’ve done in the following list. Keep in mind, however, that these are just the earliest predictions for the overall Silverado shift, which means this will mostly sound familiar if you’ve already read our blog on the 1500.
- The next-generation Silverado 2500HD will likely be built on a new platform.
- Echoing the prediction of the Silverado 1500, it’s likely that the entire nameplate – meaning the 1500, 2500HD and 3500HD – will all be built on the upcoming T1-2 platform. This is the next step in the evolution of the T1 platform on which every Silverado is currently built. The updated platform will enhance things like efficiency and performance.
- The Silverado 2500HD will likely offer next-generation small-block engine options.
- As we stated on the 1500 blog, it was in early 2023 that GM made the announcement it would be updating its small-block engine lineup to the sixth generation, investing nearly a billion dollars into its development. If the Silverado 1500 is likely to introduce the next-generation engine, the 2500HD will surely follow shortly thereafter.
- Design overhauls are sure to impress.
- While spy photos have given us a glimpse at what the Silverado 1500 may look like, we’ll have to continue using our imagination for a while in regards to the 2500HD. Even still, though we may not have a sneak peek, we can at least assume that an aesthetic overhaul is bound to come to the next-gen Chevy Silverado 2500HD.
